The coffee from Finca Yuri (our coffee project in cooperation with Tierra de Café) is available again this year. The collaboration with the Vasquez family has been worthwhile! Even after the first few years of support and cooperation, we are seeing a tremendous increase in quality. The coffees are much more harmonious and balanced, and have a very complex and interesting flavor profile.

Sustainable coffee production and support for a family in Colombia

On our trip to Colombia (more precisely to Antioquia) to visit our partner Juan and his father Luis Fernando Saldrarriaga, we met a young mother with three children living on a plantation at an altitude of approximately 1800 meters. The family's situation illustrates that current world market prices for raw coffee are far from sufficient to support a family.

Therefore, we support Yuri and her small family (3 daughters, Sara, Anna Maria, and Arda) with a fixed monthly income and a purchase guarantee. Together with Tierra de Café, we have also acquired new drying facilities, fermentation tanks, and a pulper. Previously, it was very difficult for them to make ends meet, especially since Yuri had an accident in 2016 that severely limited her ability to work on the farm.

She still manages the farm (3 hectares) and, if no one is watching, continues to pick coffee despite her illness. Although that's actually Juan's job, the pickers who are supposed to be there, are the ones who should be picking coffee.Hacienda El EncantoThey come over and do it for them. So everyone helps each other wherever they can.

The coffee is of exceptional quality, and we are delighted to offer it. Especially after upgrading our infrastructure (depulper, fermentation tank, drying system), we noticed a significant leap in quality. The coffee can now be processed faster and with fresher ingredients. It dries more quickly and consistently. This simply makes it better.

The Yuri project is also a good example of what can be achieved together. Because without the commitment of Yuri and Juan on site, and without our customers who support the project by buying coffee from us, it wouldn't be possible.

This project coffee has three main goals:

  • Building the infrastructure for coffee production to optimize quality.
  • To enable Yuri to achieve financial independence and provide them with security through the sales guarantee of their annual production (2,000 kg).
  • Financial support for the family to promote the children's development (school supplies, clothing, health)

We, so Mondo del Caffè andJuan Saldarriaga(Tierra de Cafè) know that the coffees still have room for improvement. However, they believe it will be an exciting project and that we can offer exceptionally high-quality coffee in the long run. We are contributing all our expertise, and a portion of the proceeds from this project (i.e., the sale of the coffee) will go directly towards improving the local infrastructure. So, it's an investment in your coffee enjoyment!
